KEY 100 + TOP 50 LIST

Zino's Petrel

The base 100 list consists of birds that fascinate us in this mega avian region, covered by the Almodôvar Birding Center and Observatory. How were these 100 species selected? They were chosen based on the following criteria:

  1. The birds must be found within the Iberian Peninsula and the surrounding islands (Macaronesia: Madeira, Canarias, Azores & Cape Verde). This entire region falls within the Western Palearctic avian Region, with much of it being part of Europe and the EU. Apart from Cape Verde, the area belongs to Spain with Catalonia and Portugal.

  2. Many of these birds are rare, threatened, or endangered, such as the Great Bustard, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Desertas Petrel, Cape Verde Heron, Raso Skylark, and Gran Canaria Blue Chaffinch. The main goal is to raise public awareness for conservation efforts.

  3. The list helps bird enthusiasts identify the most exciting species in the covered region and what they might encounter on tours.

  4. The base 100 list is considered our 'working list', meaning it is dynamic and subject to change based on nomenclature, taxonomy updates, and our field activities and services.

  5. From the base 100 list, we create the Top 50 list, also known as the 'must list', with these birds marked in ⭐️ #⭐️ .

Our list includes over 100 key regional birds, as well as top 50
