October 15-17, 2024: Almodôvar, Alentejo, Portugal.


During our 2-night stay in Almodôvar, we will explore the nearby area for a full day, cross-countryside in the unique grassland steppe habitats. Our goal will be to spot Great Bustards and Spanish Imperial Eagles.

Guide: Hadoram Shirihai from the Almodôvar Birding Centre will be the principal guide in Alentejo, Portugal

October 17-18, 2024: Coto Doñana National Park and the surrounding area

During our visit to the Coto Doñana area, we will have two sessions: one in the afternoon on the day of arrival and one early in the morning the next day. Our specific targets will include Marbled Teal, Ferruginous Ducks, White-headed Ducks, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Lesser Short-toed Lark, and the rare Red-knobbed Coot. Additionally, we will try to observe some young plumages of Spanish Imperial Eagles.

October 18-21, 2024: Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Tarifa and the Strait of Gibraltar area, Spain.

On our way to the Strait of Gibraltar and Tarifa areas, we will spend one night in the Sanlúcar de Barrameda area. During this time of year, the coastal riverine system of the Guadalquivir River and surrounding areas are among the richest regional bird habitats. We will also visit some sites on our way to the Strait of Gibraltar and Tarifa area. Then, we will spend two night in Tarifa, birding in the surrounding area and watching the beautiful griffon migration as they begin to approach the ocean.

Guides: The renowned ornithologist Javi Elorriaga (or one of his team members) from BIRDING THE STRAIT and Hadoram Shirihai from the Almodôvar Birding Centre.

The package includes

  •  All accommodations from day 1 to day 7 (6 nights).

  • 6 Breakfasts at the hotel. On days when the tours start early, breakfast will be self-service or packed.

  • 5 lunches and 5 or 6 dinners will be provided:
    a) Lunch includes a main course, a soft drink, coffee, and a dessert.
    b) Dinner includes a main course, a choice of soft drink, beer, or wine, a hot drink, and a dessert.
    c) Any additional items will be charged to the participant.
    d) During the tour days, the guide will distribute water to all participants.

  • On the arrival day Transportation in a comfortable vehicle for 2-4 people, depending on the final number of participants. All participants will have a window seat on tours with up to 2 participants (not including the guides).

  • An experienced birding guide will be provided for each region. Throughout the trip, ornithologist Hadoram Shirihai will join as the main guide.

  • All tours will be conducted in English.

  • A digital welcome booklet that includes an itinerary, travel information, and a checklist of the birds in the region.

  • Participants who choose to continue to the second week of the tour (Tour #2) will be included in the internal flight from Malaga to Madrid
     

The package does not include

  • All other meals and drinks

  • Transfers from Lisbon, Faro, Malaga, and other locations

  • Any flights

  • Tips for hotels, service, and guides

  • Personal travel insurance. It is the responsibility of each participant to obtain private travel insurance, which should cover challenging activities such as using a 4x4 off-road vehicle.

  • Personal items including binoculars, telescope, cameras, etc.
